Our Favorite Void

Glitter text declaring Welcome to the Club!

We are a webring rejecting "Web3," desiring more personality and connection in our online spaces. A little nostalgic, a little retro, and a little optimistic as to how the Internet can be.

We dig blogging in the smallweb. Doesn't matter what size! The written word is pretty rad.

About OFV

There has been a resurgence and rediscovery of Web Classique as the Internet becomes more corporate, capitalist, user-hostile, and algorithm-driven. It ain't fun anymore when you skim the surface. Getting online used to be more personalized and creative-- but if you branch out, it still has the potential to be this.

But why the void? Because the Internet can surely feel that way sometimes. Like the abyss, but-- instead of staring, you yell. Sometimes someone yells back and y'all become good pals that do the same kind o' yellin'. As a dear friend said to me after a mutual venting sesh:

I'm like the void, except I listen and care.

FAQs

Who is this For?

If you've ever written into the void,

or answered someone's call,

or just really really love blogging,

or you just really hate how the 'Net is now,

or you're really nostalgic for that retro web2 goodness,

or you just think it's all neat!

Cool. But what's a Webring?

Webrings were prominent in what's colloquially known as Web 2.0. As people built their online spaces, they may join a "ring" of links: with PREV and NEXT buttons, you can discover other sites of similar theme or hobby. This is only one of many aspects of the past-and-present you will see in smallweb layers.

You can read more about webrings on Brisray's article on Webring History and IndieWeb's page about Webrings.

Web 2? Small? What!?

It goes by many names. But, in short-- alternative platforms, aesthetics, and tools with a generalized retro/nostalgic vibe people have dubbed the smallweb. Or indieweb. Or yesterweb. Or old internet. Ah, and there's also the whole rejection of Web 3.0 stuff.
